I have no idea what WAS used but I could give you a few ideas about what COULD BE used to help anyone regain their health after surviving similar situations.

I think I would start them on a regimen of natural vitamins and MINERALS at once. Also assuming their diet was very poor, I would recommend a whey protein shake 2x daily to regain muscle weight.

Like every one of us, they need raw foods, whole grains, lots of fruit & vegetables, beans and legumes. Juicing veggies is great, or taking a green foods supplement. I especially like Spirulina.

Flax seed oil will speed the recovery of the hair, skin and nails.

As soon as their system would tolerate it, I would give them a good herbal-based cleanse like Renew Life's First Cleanse. This is a 15-day detoxifying cleanse but it is very gentle and well tolerated. After a week-long rest, they could go on to the parasite cleanse, another 15-day regimine. Depending upon the circumstances and health indicators they might also need a liver cleanse and/or a heavy metals cleanse. All of these work best and are best tolerated when supplemented with fiber and Omega-3 oils.

Probiotics have helped lots of people with IBS and Chron's to put on healthy weight and muscle.

Yes, there is an all natural product called Frutaiga that helps with overall physical and mental health. It was originally developed by the Soviet Union by a research scientist who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after fighting in one of their wars. good information at www.power2heal.info

Beans...
I am in the military - I talked with an old soldier that had been captured in Vietnam, escaped after 6 months - literally skin and bones... He said the soldiers that he found gave him military franks and beans, he said it was the most incredible taste in his life (even though he didn't like them before that) and to this day it is still his favorite food!! - oh and he is healthy and strong now (for an old guy)!!!

:-)
