I think that we have gone way overboard with political correctness where society has gone to the complete other extreme and ignores OBVIOUS ethnic characteristics. Seems like most people don't make their own decisions but rather follow what they are taught in school, which is stereotypes are BAD and complete lies. Anyone that brings them up is ignorant and is "felt sorry for".
REALITY FLASH: different cultures/ethnic groups have social norms that aren't followed by people of different groups; therefore, these deviations of social conduct are sometimes considered undesirable by other groups. Being annoyed by some of these differences is a normal human reaction, which is now taught to be repressed.
I bartended last night at a special event and the guests were made up of exclusively jews, many immigrants from Israel. They were the cheapest (stiffing me on tips was a norm), most pushy, rudest group of people I have ever dealt with in my life. Guess I'm just ignorant ;-)

There are different ways that some different ethnic groups live their lives, and some have different values and traditions than others. Noticing that fact is not what people perceive as wrong, it's the fashion that it is described that can create a problem. While there may be a large # of individuals from a specific group that do things a certain way, there are others that do not. The error in the rationalization is that we are stereotyping a whole society, off the actions of a few. Not everyone can be put in a box. It would be like saying all black people eat are fried chicken and watermelons, or saying that all white people live in trailers eating mayonnaise sandwiches, and have sex with their cousins! While unfortunately there are people that fit into all of the stereotypes (if there weren't where would we get the ideas), but there are also I large # In that society that are nothing like that, and are just as appalled by it as you are! And I am not saying that this is the case, but after the first few people didn't tip you, are you sure that possible your attitude didn't change, making it easier for the following patrons not to want to tip you either?!

I don't think your racial, religious or whatever background can dictate what can of person you will be. Definitely there will be some influence, but not everyone in any particular group is the same. You should not see someone and already have some preconceived notion of who they are based on radom stereotypes, get to know the person, not the ethnic group they are affiliated with.

In every area there is a Grey area so not always a norm. with crossing of races many cultural rituals are kept some not. Hard to really stereotype in general any more. Although it doesn't bother me I consider it a " In a lot of cases" kind of thing." most people consider it an "In all cases". Closed minds don't let it bother you, OK. :-)

Perhaps the reason they treated you the way they did is because they had you stereotyped already. About the tips bit, some folk think you should earn your money in contract and serve well on the hope you get a rise in pay. Tips ain't a law.

They aren't. Haven't you had diversity training? It's all about validating and celebrating stereotypes. Ever heard of Ebonics? What stronger stereotype celebration has ever been foisted on the public than the suggestion that Ebonics be taught in public schools? What's next? "Field hands r us day?" You haven't met my family if you want pushy and rude dummy.

Because people are afraid to buck the status quo. I personally am quite sick of political correctness. It is based in always having to say you are sorry and propagates many untruths.
