When in the treble clef; the lines from bottom to top are E,G,B,D,F. A good way to remember this is Every Good Boy Does Fine. The spaces are bottom to top F,A,C,E.

Below is a good website that teaches how to read sheet music. Also, you mentioned that your creating tabs. Try a program called GuitarPro 4.0. This program can convert it automatically and transpose it to different keys.

In Treble Clef (the one usually for music on the right hand) goes, from bottom to top, E, G, B, D, F, and the spaces between the lines, from bottom to top, are F, A, C, E.
In Bass Clef, for the left hand, the lines are, from bottom to top, G, B, D, F, A, and the spaces, bottom to top, A, C, E, G.

That is an eighth note. it is 1/2 of a beat. here are some other notes, just to help you learn =] Semibreve- 4 beats Minim- 2 beats Crotchet- 1 beat Quaver- 1/2 a beat- eighth note these are the basic notes, semiquavers and demisemiquavers will come later. hope you enjoy piano Hope I helped!!!

in treble clef, (the sign looks like a squiggly "S"), the bottom line is E the next lines up are G B D F. in bass clef, (the sign looks like a "C"), the bottom line is a G, and the lines up from that are B, D, F, A.
