IUDs should not cause any pain, and are generally inserted into your uterus through your partially open cervix while you are menstruating. They are great because you can not mess them up or forget them, but are really only a good option for those who have given birth already and who only have one long term partner. They do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, and if you develop one, the risk is greater for developing PID, which can affect your fertility. They are inserted at a regular office visit, and it only takes about 5 minutes for the whole process. The Mirena is highly recommended because it releases very low doses of hormone, increasing its effectiveness. Some women experience more cramping while on their periods.

I have the IUD and it's wonderful! I recommend it to all my friends. I never have to remember a pill and my IUD lasts 5 years! The only thing that hurts is when they insert it which is uncomfortable and you may experience a little cramping for a day or two but after that you won't notice anything. I have shorter periods and no cramps! Hope this helps

I'll tell you my experience with the IUD (loop) kind. There are different types. It's been several years ago when I had mine....My doctor said that it was not recommended anyone get one unless the have had a child...Well I was only married for 8 months...so I went ahead and did it anyway...I was rushed to the emergency room two times with in 3 months, and I had it removed....It kept slipping out of place...It caused a lot of cramping...but you will have to discuss with your Gyn, because this was several years ago and products always improve as the years go by...Maybe there is a great product for you ....That's just my experience with the LOOP.

They are a long-term contraceptive, and are typically best for women who have already had a child, because the uterus has been stretched out and is more flexible. Because it is long-term (5 years) they usually recommend it for women who are done having children.
I got mine last year at 39 (my only child was 14 then). It hurt a lot when it was put in, but then was OK, with the exception of occasional twinges as it settled into position (especially the first few times I was intimate with my boyfriend). Now I pretty much forget it's there, and I barely have periods.
