Without all that protection there would be several deaths in football every year !!! Rugby players wouldn't last 1 quarter in the NFL (or college for that matter). It's the roughest sport on the planet, they go out full contact, head to head and everything. Not close lining and tripping each other like in Rugby. It's called football because on every single position after a touchdown the ball is kicked for either an extra point and also kicking the ball off to the other team. Field goals are also very vital to the game as well, and don't forget about punts. So if you think about it, kicking is a large part of the game. Sixty percent of the time spent on a football field actually is spent kicking the football.

Well it is kicked on kickoff and for field goals and other times. Whats a name anyway? Don't be so picky. The pads allow the players to hit much harder and survive. Have an American foot ball player hit a rugby player sometime and I bet the rugby player would wake up in the hospital. In fact there are serious injuries every year to necks, knees, and backs. In short it just a different game. If you do not like it ,do not watch it, whats the big deal.

Football in the USA is rough like rugby.. the reason for all the padding is that it can get down right ugly and dangerous out there. When you have a 300 LB guy coming at you who is going to try and stop you, you will need all the padding you can get. There have been incidents where players have been paralyzed for life, it is really a hard rough game.

Well, I do know that the introduction of pads and helmuts was made madatory by teddy rosevelt while he was president of the us in the early 1900's. 7 players died due to head injuries the year he made it madatory.
As for the name, well, it may have to do with the combination of kicking the ball, also because when the game was invented, there was no forward pass. Meaning the players would only kick it, or run to advance and score points. So it may be because it was a fast paced running game, that "football" has that meaning as well.

.....THE EDUCATION OF THE WORLD CONTINUES, ONE MORON AT A TIME.....American football was established before association football. In those days, there was a greater emphasis on kicking the ball in order to advance it toward the end zones. It has evolved into a pass first, run second, kick third strategy. An Englishman by the last name of Brown decided that association football needed to be different and coined the term "soccer" that continues to be marketed under that name by the powers that be in Europe. Basically, we didn’t need to name it soccer because we already had football. And it isn’t necessary to dispute me, look it up....THE EDUCATION OF THE WORLD CONTINUES, ONE MORON AT A TIME.....
