I grew up in the midwest and I REALLY hate cold weather, so I like the climate in Phoenix. The summers are tolerable if you don't have to be outside much. The rest of the year is beautiful. The skies are blue so much of the time that clouds are a novelty and rain is celebrated.

There is plenty to do here. We have all the professional sports, concerts, theater, museums and every kind of outdoor activity you can think of. There is every kind of restaurant and tons of shopping.

It is kind of expensive to live here, but you do save in many ways. Things don't rust, mold and rot like they do in wetter climates. Cars last a lot longer and never rust. Life is generally simpler - you don't need winter clothes, you don't have to winterize your home, there is no shoveling snow or scraping the ice off your car. You can have maintenance free native landscaping around your home and never have to mow the lawn.

Many large companies are based here and there are plenty of jobs.

Unfortunately, the secret is out and everyone and their brother wants to live here, so it has become quite crowded. The traffic is horrible. The housing market went crazy a couple of years ago and homes are now very expensive. The schools have not been able to keep up with the growth and the public schools are overcrowded. Phoenix is on its way to becoming very much like LA, but without the beaches.

Cons:

It's hot....it can reach up to 120 degrees
There is really not a lot to do if you are under 21
Winter birds that don't know how to drive
The locals that don't know how to drive
All the illegal people with no auto insurance
Scorpions and snakes
Apartments are expensive
Wildfires
If you don't have a pool the summer will suck
Traffic sucks here
Not the easiest place to find jobs

Pros:

Arizona has the best community colleges in the nation
Arizona State University.....definitely a party school
Pretty close to Mexico and California
If you want cold weather, there's always Flaggstaff
Sedona is gorgeous
Good hiking places (in the winter)

Just so you know....
Don't walk outside barefoot in the summer
Don't touch anything metal, leather, or plastic in your car if it has been sitting in the heat (even for only 10 minutes)
Shred everything that has any information about you on it (Arizona is a bad state for identity theft)

Pros: It has quite a bit of selection of apartments for rent at reasonable prices and they are kind of all over the city. There are many to choose from but most of them require a 6 month or more contracts... Although the temperatue is high, it is a dry heat with low humidity, so not as hot as if it has high humidity. It is quite huge and spread-out, so you don't feel so crowded like in small places... It ranks 2nd for the best cities to get a job according to Forbes 2006 and so it has quite a bit of jobs. The employers here also seem nice and want to hire people. The people here seemed kind of laid-back, kind, friendly and nice... No natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and so forth...

Cons: Since it borders with Mexico, there are many illegal aliens here and people who try to get here by crossing the border. It is not as beautiful a place as San Francisco or some other cities... There are very few museums, operas, etc.. and a lot less metropolitan or modern as New York City. Most places are just flat and rugged lands. There are not any high-rises here except for in the downtown area.... Few shopping malls too and they are also kind of spread out in like 4 corners of the city ... It can be kind of crowded with people on the buses too and most people drive here... There were 2 serial killers that have been on loose for a year in the city. Now, there are still one or two serial killers on loose in the city. Drugs, smuggling and gangs also exist here...

Phoenix, despite the fact that crammed with Chicago transplants, is unquestionably distinctive than Chicago. it rather is a lot extra unfolded, and would not rather have distinctive areas like Chicago does. It would not even have "neighborhoods," rather, however there are aspects the place distinctive human beings *tend* to stay, like college scholars in Tempe and placed up-college grads in Scottsdale and wasteland Ridge. that's an outstanding place to advance teenagers - the fee of residing is a lot, some distance below Chicago, you may handle to pay for extra of a house (noticeably now) and once you're a advertising considerable who speaks Spanish, you need to be able to come across a job right here without too a lot subject. it rather is not as exciting a city as Chicago - it would not have that time of way of existence. There are some good museums, good eating places, good theater, an stunning zoo, an aquarium being geared up, and professional activities communities (plus the Cubs prepare right here interior the iciness), regardless of if it rather is not on the point of Chicago, not with the aid of a protracted shot. regardless of if it rather is extra exciting than Iowa. the climate is amazingly the different of Chicago. interior the summertime, you're form of trapped by using warmth. it rather is one hundred ten in the process the day - granted, a "dry" warmth, different than in August, whilst slightly humidity develops (in comparison to Chicago, not even close) yet nonetheless sizzling till it rains. the actual subject in summer season, to me, isn't a lot the daylight hours yet that it would not quiet down a lot in the process the night. You pass exterior at 9 PM and it rather is nonetheless ninety 5 tiers, which in simple terms feels incorrect someway. yet that in the time of basic terms lasts a month or 2, July and August. with the aid of September it rather is down interior the eighty's interior the night, and that feels super, and with the aid of iciness it rather is superb.

When I first moved down here to Phoenix from the high country, someone told me that there were a lot of two kinds of things: guns and strippers. Well, there's more than that. We got guns, and strippers, and tons of mexicans, ASU students, old people (snowbirds) mormons, indians, and purveyors of meth labs.

But seriously, it really does depend on 1.) why you want to move here and 2.) where you're moving from.

E-mail me if you got additional questions or want some clarification...

phoenix is great to live in. its a city that is growing like crazy. yes there are a lot of illegals here. but that doesnt bother us here. becus without them we wouldnt have a city this big and rich. right?
