Best? There is no best in music, it's all opinions. The best to you or a certain group of people might be different to someone else. With me I couldn't answer this with good conscious because I'm not arrogant enough to believe there is a "best", no offense this is my opinion, because people all have different views. Guns and Roses, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Stone Sour, Judas Priest, Korn and Slipknot are my favorite bands but I wouldn't say any of them are the best. Some might say the best was the first, but the first must have gotten the idea from some other type of music so if that's true you'd have to go outside of rock and into jazz and where it came from and so on.

Difficult one - Led Zepp, Deep Purple (Mk2), The Doors, The Who, Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult (in their Gonzo period), Soundgarden, Kyuss, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Killing Joke, Velvet Underground .....

For sheer influence I'd probably choose Black Sabbath as many modern bands are heavily influenced by them, Led Zepp as they were not just a rock band - there are a lot of folk and other influences to be heard in their music and the Beatles for being in the middle of a cultural revolution.

If you are looking at cult influences then the Velvets and Killing Joke are bands who have made an impact far greater than their commercial sales.

To difficult but for sure it would be an oldie, no one recent has topped the standard that bands like Pink Flloyd, Led Zep, Black Sabbath set.

The Beatles. Without a shadow of a doubt. Did every type of music and invented heavy rock with their song 'Helter Skelter'. It's on The Beatles (white album) 1968.
