In War of the Worlds movie, why was their car the only one working?

i missed the first 30 min. can someone explain please?

A mechanic was working on a van when he asked tom cruise what happen and why the cars don't run and Tom sayed try the solenoid and replace it and the mechanic did. And that how the van was the only car running.

The mechanic had been working on it and just replaced some key parts in the engine, so they were unaffected by the wave. Like any new cars assembled after the blast would work.

part of each car engine is effected by electro magnetic waves or something. tom cruise told the car mechanic to change that part with a fresh one and that's why it worked. i think. watch the movie again, it mentions the part of the car that tom wants changed.

Forget that -- why when they were escaping down the highway, was there a nice clear path for them? It was like all the cars nicely pulled off to the side of the road when they broke down.
