It'll take about a month from the time you have a full tan until the time you have winter-light skin again if you just stop going into the sun.

Of course, the tan will slowly fade the whole time, so you might notice that your tan is "gone" or way less severe after only a week or two.

Want to know why?

This is way too in-depth, I'm sure, but what the heck?

The pigment in your skin is called melanin. How dark your skin has to do with how much melanin is in your skin cells. Melanin is produced by special cells called melanocytes.

What does this have to do with a tan? When exposed to more sun than usual, melanocytes are stimulated to produce more melanin, meaning that your skin darkens. After the melanin is in the skin cells, it remains until the cells fall off and are replaced.

The skin cells you touch are not actually alive. They're layers and layers of dead cells on top of a living layer. The living layer is where the new cells are created, and as new cells are created the old ones are pushed up and die. It's a cycle. More cells are produced, more ar scraped off. The living layer where the melanin is produced, so your tan remains until that layer of cells is scraped off the top.

Make sense? Skin cells grow and reporduce so quickly that we grow an entire new skin every few weeks -- in general it'll take 35 days from a cell's production until it is shed. That's how long it would take for your tan to fade if you didn't continue your sun exposure.

Maybe it will fade if you stay inside for like... weeks. If you don't want to get tanner, and you have to go outside (who wouldn't want to?) just apply sunscreen on yourself. I'm tan too, but I don't want it to compeletly fade... accept your skin as it is!
