I'm female - I understand her confusion!
Okay, so you have the goalie in the goal and you have the rest of the guys running around - okay so far?
If the ball is passed towards the goalie and AT THE SAME TI ME, OR BEFORE a player from the same side is closer to the goalie than a member of the opposite team, then the ball is considered to be 'offside'
If there is a member of the opposing team between, then it isn't offside.
I understand what it means but I have to say that I have never actually been able to yell 'offside!' while watching a match.
It is undoubtedly easier to see at an actual match rather than trying to see it on the TV - that way you can see the complete pitch and hopefully see it building up to show your wife what happens. That's the way that I learnt!
And I'm still trying to explain it to my husband!
Really loved the answer about the shoe shop and the purse - says it all, really!

Okay here goes, I didnt understand it either but then I heard this on 'This Morning' trying to put it from a womans point of view. Its a very basic little story but it worked for me!

Theres a queue of women standing in a line in a shoe shop, there is the most marvelous pair of shoes sitting on the till that the lady second in the queue wants, she could barge in front of the woman in front but cant as she hasnt got her purse, so she looks for her friend at the back of the line to throw her her purse to her. The friend throws the purse and as soon as its in the air the woman barges to the front of the line and catches the purse and is able to buy the shoes before anyone else.

Thats the general idea of the offside rule, there are a lot more rules to it but it might help someone!!

okay in soccer, if the person with the soccer ball is running down the field towards the other goal to score a point and he is in between the last defender and the goalie it is offsides. the last defender must be further down field than the player trying to score a goal. also if the goalie AND the last defender are both behind the player trying to shoot a goal, it is offsides.

um.. lol in a womans point of view - well i hope this is correct anyway...

One person and (goaly) of the defending team must be closer to the goal (their goal) than the attaking team when the ball is passed from one attaking team member to the other. If the receiving player is in front when the ball leeves the passers foot (closer to the goal that the defending team) it is off side.
This only counts in the oppersitions side not their own bit.

So if you counted a England goaly then England player then Spanish player its not offside but if it went England Goaly then spanish player (when all above happens) its off side.

pmsl! ok a man wouldnt say it like that but hey im a woman!!

That right lol?

It's necessary to understand what it's for. The rule was created to stop strikers loitering around the opposition's goal, waiting for the ball to fall at their feet and whack it in the back of the net.

The essence of it is that if an attacking player passes the ball to a teammate who is closer to the opposition's goal, there must be a defender of the opposing team who is closer to the goal than the teammate when the ball is passed.

You’re in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have. The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses. It would be totally rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes. The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma. She prepares to throw her purse to you. If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes. At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and, *whilst it is in flight* you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes. Always remembering that until the purse had *actually been thrown* it would be plain wrong to push in front of the other shopper.

IF THE BALL IS PLAYED AND THE STRIKER OR OTHER IS AHEAD OF THE DEFENDER WHEN THE BALL IS PLAYED HE IS OFFSIDE. BUT NOW IF THE ATTAKER DOSN'T TOUCH THE BALL, HE IS'NT OFFSIDE AND SOMEONE ELSE CAN CHASE IT LEVEL OR BEHIND THE DEFENDER, THEY ARE NOT OFFSIDE BUT IF THERE AHEAD OF THE DEFENDER BUT IN THERE OWN HALF NOT OFFSIDE, BECAUSE HOW CAN YOU BE OFFSIDE IN YOUR OWN HALF.

If the ball is passed to a player who is in front of the defender(s) it is offsides.

In other words, there has to be a defender between the goal and the offender the ball is passed to.

When the player that is kicking the ball KICKS the ball you cant be in front the last defender, if you are in front of him then you cannot be involved in the play.
