Football arrived to the US only 6 years after the schism from Rugby College and it was played mainly in colleges. The first football game in the US was played with the Football Association rules but during the following 9 years colleges favored Rugby College rules. It then took it's own route as a different sport but nobody ever bothered changing the name.

Because:

American football was born from a split in Rugby League (Due to American football wanting to be able to throw the ball forward)

Rugby League was born from a split in Rugby Union (Due to rule disputes)

Rugby Union was born from a split with association football or soccer (Due to Rugby Union players wanting to tackle players and use hands)

So Americans may claim that they have been calling it football for longer than soccer, but that is incorrect. Why they call it football is beyond me. Soccer uses the feet more than American football does.

Just one more thing Americans wanted to claim as their own while stealing a name cleary adopted somewhere in the whole world. Do you how confusing it is for me to talk about Football in USA? At least when I'm speaking in French I can say "Foot" and it's understood.
Why don't we call American Football just what it is American Rugby.

Because the game has evolved considerably since it's inception in the mid-1800's. Originally the game was played more like Rugby. The advent of the forward pass changed the game drastically but, the name stuck. Now, can you explain why you call your version of baseball cricket. Also, what's with the week long games?

.....THE EDUCATION OF THE WORLD CONTINUES, ONE MORON AT A TIME.....American football was established before association football. In those days, there was a greater emphasis on kicking the ball in order to advance it toward the end zones. It has evolved into a pass first, run second, kick third strategy. An Englishman by the last name of Brown decided that association football needed to be different and coined the term "soccer" that continues to be marketed under that name by the powers that be in Europe. Basically, we didn’t need to name it soccer because we already had football. And it isn’t necessary to dispute me, look it up....THE EDUCATION OF THE WORLD CONTINUES, ONE MORON AT A TIME.....

Because the sport originated from association football (aka soccer). In fact, the form of the sport played in the 1870's was basically full contact soccer.

You kick it for extra points, field goals, kickoffs, and on certain turnovers. What you call football could more accurately be called "everything except hands-ball".
