If your condensor was pierced by a bullet, you need not worry about discharging your ac system, as there was a very large leak placed in the system (a bullet hole). However, when you replace the condenser, you'll have to evacuate the system before you charge it with R-134a. Also, make sure you put in some PAG oil in the system as the when you lost your refrigerant, you'll have also lost a good deal of lubricant in the system.

When you are ready to charge your system, you should probably not try to do it yourself. The equipment you need to do this right would not save you any money. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

AC systems require special equipment to replace condenser. For example discharging the refrigerant into the atmosphere is not legal, but if condenser has a bullet hole then all refrigerant is gone. Garages have to collect refrigerant from pressurized systems. Second once removed and replaced the system must be put under a vacuum to insure air and all moisture is removed then refrigerant is charged into the system up to a specific pressure and checked for leaks to insure there are not other problems. so normally this requires a professional to do properly as well as safely. If system is pressurized the pressure is relieved from the low pressure side, before the compressor at the Schroeder valve, and collected as noted above.

well since you have no freon left in your system and air is in it now Id first off get the damaged condensor replaced, then at the same time replace the receiver, driver(Accumulator on a GM) and a s soon as I put that in I,d hook it on a recycling machine and clean the system as air getting in causes acids and reacts and lets miosture in, after I get all the air out and know the AC system is sealed correct then Id recharge it with R134a and put the right ammount of oil in, I assume you dont have a recycling machine so a trip to the shop is a sure thing for you, dont try it the back yard way as you will be doing it all over again! Good luck!

If it is working okay, don't do anything to it. If the condenser has sprung a leak (from the shooting or from anything else), you really should hook it up to a machine that can vacuum out the system. That way, when you replace the condenser, you can start over with fresh, clean refrigerant. Those machines are very expensive. So unless you can borrow one, you will need to take it to a mechanic to get that done.
