Slugs and snails are actually different species. They're very closely related (obviously), and are equally as destructive to plants.
Although, some slugs have plates in their bodies where a shell would be if they were snails...
Kind of like humans still have a tailbone, but we don't have tails like monkies.

Slugs have what use to be there shell on there back they don't need the shell because they are mostly found in a tree stump dead log or leaf litter. Slugs just don't need the shell they evolved out of the weighty thing.

They are the not the same.
French, edible snails never touch the ground. They are raised off the ground.
