You can encrypt a file and it can only be re-opened via a password. There are a number of these but Cryptainer LE is pretty good and its freeware. It creates a 'vault' for any kind of file which can only be opened by you.

you can't password folders in xp. however if you put you fotos in a .zip file, and password the .zip file then your job is complete

its a bit out there but other than encypting them in a vault or something then maybe you could just water mark your images so if people want to see them they can but they wont be any good until you give them an origional version.

put them in a folder whitch is not a shared document!
