I'm trying to decide which of the three to get with a new desktop computer. Can someone explain, in layman's terms, what the differences are?

They are all OK. If your needs are minimal get either a Celeron, or low end Athlon. It will be cheap & works fine.

A high end Pentium is a power hog. It uses a lot of elec. power & runs very hot.

If you need serious compute power (e.g. serious Photoshop work) then I'd get a high end dual core Athlon. If you are very serious (spending $$) I'd wait a few months (if you can) and buy the new Intel Core 2 Duo (not a Duo Core) processor. It is faster & uses less power than the comparable Athlon.

Celeron vs. Pentium vs. Athlon processors? It's mostly a matter of price Pentium and Celeron are made by Intel and Athlon by AMD. Pentium costs more, but unless you're going to play very fast 3-D games any of them will work the same, but if you want the best go with Pentium.
