How many girls stopped attending school? How many left the country or decided to take off the headscarves?
How about Germany and Turkey?

This is a very good question!..
.And one that many Muslim school girls in France have had to deal with.
They had to choose between their desire to study and succeed and their or their religious convictions...
An impossible choice!!!!!

You will have to find a website that deals with this, I think.
This law was France's way of trying to prevent the fundamentalist Islamists from dominating French culture, I guess. There is fear everywhere that they will make inroads into western culture and try to change it.

North Americans are generally more tolerant and, some would say, to their own detriment. I guess that remains to be seen.

Each country has to find its own way of dealing with the terrorist threats of the past decade, and one way is to discourage Islamists from feeling comfortable in their adopted country.

Not all Muslims are terrorists, but many of the terrorists acts have been perpetrated by Muslims, so the less "at home" they feel in a country, the less likely they will stay and plot against the people there.
I don't know if this strategy works, but I guess felt it was worth a try.

It seems to me that I read somewhere that the Shah of Iran banned hijab in Iran/Persia and that led to Khomeini's revolution. If you come to SE Michigan you will see Muslim women with a head scarf, and some with a jilbab, and some with abayah and niqab, all forms of hijab. The Muslim women go to school, go to work, shop, go to the airport and no one bothers them, they do not bother anyone.

People are very sensitive about their religion and its accoutrements. Seikhs wear a turban and never cut their hair, they also have a comb, bracelet and a knife that they carry around which are part of the 5 K's of their religion. Jews wear a kippah (yarmulke), Wiccans wear a pentagram, Mormons have special undergarments. Zoroastrians have a belt. Superman has a cape. Who cares???

The US is the most tolerant government when it comes to religious freedom. In Hamtramck, Michigan the Al Isla mosque won a court case to allow it to broadcast over loudspeakers the azan (Muslims call to prayer) at 5 times EVERY day from 6 am to 10 pm. Dearborn has a Bint Jebail cultural center. Kids in Dearborn receive halal food for breakfast and lunch in the federally subsidized school lunch program.
