What type of nationalism? Ethnic nationalism? Racial Nationalism? Civic Nationalism? The answers are different for eash type and each state. You need to narrow your topic and start reading some theory before you start asking HUGE historical questions like that (PS: If that is a high school to second year paper topic you chose YOU ARE WAY OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE. Pick a new topic)
As to Charles de Gaulle, you talking about him as the leader of the Free French or as the president? Are you really talking about the foundation of the Sixth Republic or the Fifth? Again, narrow your topic.
