If I were unfortunate enough to be in an accident that made me unrecognisable to family and loved ones I would be able to convince them I am me by recalling memories and sharing facts that only I could know. If the accident didn't physically harm me but resulted in amnesia on my part then it would be my friends and family who would do their best to convince me I am me. So where am I and who am I if the accident results in disfigurement and amnesia?

I think you had better wear ID.

If you have amnesia and disfigurement, you will just go on and start a new life. You wouldn't know which family to convince that you belong with them and they wouldn't know where to find you. But this is theoretical. In reality, there will be a lot of people trying to help you find your way back, like the police who is investigating the scene of accident, or the witnesses that brought you to the hospital. Somewhere along the way, they will be able to find proof and trace you back to your family.

Just answered a similar question...

Depends on what you consider to be YOU. Personally, I think YOU are your spirit. That has absolutely nothing to do with your body. Let's say you got into that accident with your mother? And let's say she's suffering from amnesia also. Would you be able to recognize her?

OF COURSE YOU WOULD! You would recognize her energy. Her spirit.

Try something at home. Close your eyes and have one of your family members walk up behind you. I'll bet you'll be able to tell the difference between one family member and another.

In these days of DNA screening, dental records, etc., it is extremely unlikely that no one could figure out who you were.

However, if that did happen, you would be a ward of the state, and probably not too unhappy, since you had no idea how you got there, or what you were before.

It is pretty sad to consider, though.

Don't you keep your ID on you at all times? I'm sure the police officers and hospital men will be able to identify you to your friends and family.

I would say you have lost your identity then. Nobody would know who you are, unless they got to see you acting in a certain way; your behaviour - the way you talk, walk -. I believe that even though you might have lost your identity, you would still behave the same way (as these are already embedded in your subconscious mind).

a good question, dna could prove who you are, once that is done ,either family or friends could help you to re create your life, amnesia total is rarer than you would believe.

they could identify you by dental records, fingerprints, birthmarks, the clothes & shoes you had on when you went into the hospital, jewellery, piercings, tattoo's - anything that sets you slightly apart from someone else is to your advantage.

This would be one of the only points in your life where you could start again and be whoever you want to be.

unfortunately you'd be nobody; without memory and the confirmation of others then the person/individual is pretty much extinguished.
