I have a 1987 Nissan Sentra as my first car. i am only 15 and dont even have my permit yet. I got the car for free from a friend and didnt mind this little problem. I dont have a lot of money and am not looking to spend more than the car is worth to fix the problem. When i stop at lights the engine stalls and shut off unless i throw the car into neutral. I dont really mind do so i just would like the car to run better so i have less to worry about. Thank you

Robert

why are you driving if you don't even have a permit yet? the float on the carburetor is sticking. mine used to die in a left hand turn. OR the idle needs adjustment.....Either way-it should be a minor problem

It's probably an electrical problem of some kind. Your car will be revving at a reduced rate in neutral and if that reduction is enough to avoid stalling then it's a case of inadequate power supply. If it's a stick you can check this by clutching and revving the engine in gear, that should stop it stalling too.

The problem could be in quite a few places, anywhere in the electrical system, but a bad alternator or battery are the most likely explanations. Since it's an old car, unless you know it has a new battery in it, that's probably the place to start - replace the battery and make sure your connections are clean. If the stalling in gear comes back after a little while the problem is either the alt itself, or a wiring problem between alt and battery. In that case you'll have to take it into the shop to test the alt.

It's feasible that it could be a fuel supply issue of some kind, but if it's only stalling in gear it's way more likely to be an electrical problem IMO.

First do not drive illegally. But to fix the car you just may need the idle adjusted or a simple tune up. All cars require maintenance to run safely and properly, so if you do not have the money for this park the car until you are a legal drive and can afford to fix it. If you are mechanically inclined take a class in school on car maint. So even if you never work on cars your self you will at least be knowledgeable enough to have an intelligent conversation with your mechanic. It is not smart to drive illegally in a car that does not run safely, as you could get seriously hurt or hurt some one else. Be safe.

Could be a bunch of things, Id first make sure the fuel system is clean, like the carb if its equiped with one, also you may find a tune up will work wonders, also since you say that it stalls in gear then Id also maybe think of turning the idle slightly higher to compensate a little, although this isnt the idle fix it may help you, get the plugs and wires done, put a new air filter in and change the fuel filter and that may be all you need! Good luck!

Adjust the Idle setting on the Carborator, make sure A/C is off, if the compressor is worn out, it can drag the belt and make you stall. I have a 1987 Nissan Wagon, 4 wd- I use in Winter months. Also make sure the Air Filter is new- best to start learning- about cars now-

Well it is probly eather your starter or your transmition or your altanato. Take it to auto zone have them test the altanato. is it is good try when it shuts off to tap the starter with a hamer or something. If it starts it is the starter. If it is none of thoes things it is probly the transmission in witch case I would just get another car

Take it to a mechanic or your dealer's service center. I don't have the expertise to tell you what is wrong with it, but it is dangerous for your car to stall in the middle of the road.

ther is something called the alternator i think that keeps teh engine ticking over, if its 'gone' this will happen

u just need a new one, but it may have damaged other parts of your engine so can be quite bad

There are so many things. The first thing I think of is a vacuum leak. Lift the hood, do you hear a sucking sound?
