It has to do with what we see on t.v, most spanish tv shows only have the white spanish characters. And then there are people who donot know the history of latino people. Latinos come in all shades. GO visit the latin countries.

It is simply a matter of perspective relative to what one considers white or light skinned. I am caucasion [anglo, celtic and saxon]. To compare Latinos of Spanish and Native American descent, they are quite dark compared to me. However, I have a black friends that consider them to be white.
The fact is; the majority of Latinos are some shade of "brown" when it comes to skin color, and just under half are very light skinned on one side and very dark "black" on the other. I have met many people from Argentina, Peru and Chile that are probably of German and Dutch descent and are "white". I have some Cuban and Puerto Rican friends that are "black". The rest fall everywhere in between.
We all tend to stereotype groups of people and our stereotyping depends a great deal on our perceptions of ourselves in contrast to those people.

I would guess TV. I dont, I tend to generalize that they are darker skinned, just because the ones that I know are. My husband is darker than many black people. His whole town is about the same as him. I will try to remember that not all latinos are dark skinned.

I don't know. Where I live, most of the Latinos are from El Salvador, Nicaragua, and the Honduras and they are very fair skinned. But many of the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans have very tan complexions and they are very lovely.

The spanish are not the only ones to mix with south and central american indians. Many black slaves escaped to south america and intergrated with local cultures making the dark latinos of today.

Some of us have led lives where we've grown up only around our own kind. I saw my first latino when I went to college. Growing up, there was only 1 black kid in my school. Then, in high school, 2.
Sorry, it's lack of exposure that makes us ignorant. We just don't know any better.

I would guess "so many people" do not live in california, or any other heavily latino-influenced location!

They aren't, however, it could be the individual's experience and exposure to the culture.
Don't take it personal, just chalk it up to ignorance.
BTW, you can thank "J-Lo" for the misconception too.
