I feel there are two main reasons prejudice will always be with us in one form or another.

Feeling superior.
This was said to me (by someone who never could hold down a job or make ends meet) when I asked if he could afford the rent where he was moving.
"What do you think? I'm not like those muchachos from the other side of the tracks who doesn't even TRY to pay their bills!"
translation; "I may be a loser but I'm not as a big of a loser as THOSE people!"

Shortcut
I takes a while to know who is honest & who isn't, who is a hard worker & who isn't, etc.
Prejudice allows people to think they can look at someone & have a short cut to knowing those important things.

In the case of prejudice against muslims, the "shortcut" is very appealing. We live in a very scary world where people plot to blow up planes. As people pile onto a plane or bus, they want to feel like they can look around & know who to watch out for.

But the truth is, although 100% of the 21 terrorists arrested are apparently of Pakistani descent, they represent the attitude of about .5% of all Muslims. And young, blonde hair, blue-eyed peole are being converted to Islam all the time. An extremist gets ahold of one of them & you may have a terrorist that is easy to slip through security. In other words, the "shortcut" of racism is just an illusion.

If the truth be known we are probably all guilty at some time or another. We all moan about 'foreigners' from time to time but only when it suits the situation.......like oh we dont want a Pakistani moving in next door...... but then we are so glad when the Pakistani surgeon at the local hospital performs a successful operation on you, then thats ok. We call the Chinese, the Indians etc but have no qualms about invading the local takeaway on a Saturday night, then they're your best mate! Racism is the result of ignorance, & ignorance ofother cultures, their ways of living, their beliefs..... no one is asking us to be the same as them or them to be the same as us but just to be tolerant & understanding of each other . Abiding by the law of the land however is another issue entirely, and regardless of race etc we all must abide by the same laws and to sort out any differences in a civilised manner, that way we will all get on

a number of my friends were born outwith this country and came here seeking polititcal refuge. Many of them face daily racism, especially my zimbabwian and algerian friends who are easily picked out because of the colour of their skin. 'get back to your own country' is sometimes the most hurtfull....many of these people who face this form of racism were born in this country so they are home!
