The pictures and drawings are us and not. They resemble and don't. They are only one perspective: ours and the photographer's. And that's never the whole picture.
I wonder what 'true' is. I am true in the picture where I eat and I am very ugly as my mouth is full of food. I am true in the one I climb mountain, and I am true in the one I am ready to leave for a party and I am very pretty and elegant in my evening dress. And even in those given moments I look different from the angle of the photographer, from the perspective of the one who is sitting near me and the perspective of the stranger who sits at the next table.
And it's also a matter of choice. Of how I want people to see me: funny, sporty, beautiful...
It's not only the Internet. The true self and the picture you want to communicate merge on many levels of our life.

Some people (like me) want a true likeness of themselves on Y! Answers. I'm sure there are a lot of people though that don't want a true likeness for several reasons.

It's so easy to be fake anywhere. My avatar doesn't represent my true physical likeness, but it may come close to my inner one.

I created my avatar with as many of my own real features as possible. (i have red hair, hazel eyes-so I chose green instead), the outfit my avatar is weraing is something i would actually wear...that is a good question though.

These avatars are caricatures, cartoons. No telling what they look like behind the avis. I only generally resemble mine; there are no heavyset or middle aged avis on Yahoo.

Mine is as close as the avatar program allows, considering that there are no choices for faces that look older than 25 years! (Unless I missed that part?)

My avatar is similar to me, except that my hair isn't quite that red.
