chinchillas are pretty cool but they do poop alot, when I say alot I mean A LOT. Hamsters don't like to be held so but they are pretty cool as well. I actually have a pair of female chichillas. Chinchillas like to be in same sex pairs but only with the female, as with all rodents, males will be agressive. Hamsters don't like to be together unless for breeding. Chinchillas where I live cost 119.99 or something like for ONE. Hamsters cost between usually 5-maybe 20 I don't know. But chinchillas require a sand box for sand bathes, wheel without the spoke, solid please, large cage( hey these thing are pretty big for rodent about same size as guinea pig), nest for sleeping, two+ story cage as said before, food, large water bottle, chew toys and Timothy HAy. Hamters require a small cage, food, small water bottle, chew toys, shavings, wheel, and a ball for outside of the cage exercise. Just telling what you need to prepare for the animals if do get them. I prefer chinchillas by the way...

Chinchillas are naturally more nervous than hamsters. I think hamsters would be better around children.
Children need to be taught how to treat pets, or they could get too rough for something as small as a hamster.

definitely hamsters, I had my hamster for 3 and a half years, He did escape once and lived under the stairs for six months, only coming out late at night after we had all gone to bed, we set up traps and everything, still unable to catch him, in the end he fell into the large pot that we kept the dog biscuits in, he really became one of the family and we were sad when died

Chinchillas are marketable for their pelts. They're more fragile than hamsters. Hamsters are more odiferous. Hamsters make cool dog and cat toys, but have few other uses.

Well, hamsters cost $5, and chinchillas cost $100. Hmmmmmm....... Actually neither one are that great of pets. Rats are way better, cleaner, more intelegent, and they actually LIKE to be held and petted.
