BP's abhorrent lack of maintenance caused this to happen. They have a horrible track record of raking in the money but not putting very much back to maintenance.

OMG - the tinfoil hats are out today. Crude oil has a high sulfur content, this blend, Light Sweet, I believe, is lower, but it nevertheless does contain sulfur. There are other reasons and it very well might be the case that BP just left it in disrepair, but you tell me, how much money do you make if you sell Zero barrels of oil a day? Since BP is publicly traded, what happens when they don't make earnings because 10% of their oil sales just stopped? Oil is traded on commodities markets, in 2003, according to "Oil & gas Journal" world production was 68 million barrels a day. Prudhoe Bay has 400,000 barrels. Let's see that's 400,000/ 68,000,000 which is about 0.0058% about 6 tenths of 1%.
Oil was around $75 before the news came out, it's at $75 now. Oh, and hurricane season has been well under way for over two months, (from June 1), so much for that one. Conspiracies are so much sexier than facts.

I'm sure that they have known this for quite some time,,,,, and im sure that they knew this was going to happen ,,,as the pipes are not made of gold ..... But even then ,,,im sure gold would eventually rust in this case....I think the reason for the oil prices going up is just a case of over population,,, oil is in High demand ,,,even more so now adays.... and yes,,,the rusting pipes could just be an excuse...

i think you just want someone person or conspiracy to blame for things. You don't want to believe that the economy really works the way it does. Driven by supply and demand. Also by who is willing to do what jobs at what price.
I think you want to blame some one in the government or high in a company every time some thing does not go your way. Also you think nothing is the fault of working class people or unions. So under this premise since that is bad for your pocket book it must be a conspiracy. All the news media, government, and oil companies are in on it just to get a few more cents a gallon from you at the pump. Also the environmentalist groups and lobby groups are in on it too.
Either that or you are a paranoid nut job looking for someone to blame for things you don't like.

And what would you have thought if they had shut it down this time in 2005? Hmmmmmmm?
Or the year before that, or next year? Next hurricane season?
You're listening to politicians with an agenda.
Can you say, "Election year"?
