Do you believe that anyone will EVER do anything about gas prices??? Are they just going to let us keep paying these outrageous prices and do NOTHING to help us?

I cannnot believe that some of you are actually DEFENDING the price of gasoline. Does anyone care that a lot of our population are elderly people on a fixed income. This is effecting them going to get groceries to eat etc because they dont have the money to buy gas!!! I am feeling the punch of gas prices and YES we CAN do something. How about we start knocking those tree freaks out of the way and go to Alaska and take what we need to save our people ! OIL PRICES are also affecting people heating their homes in the winter..but of course I guess you would rather save a damn tree than to save an elderly persons life because they cant afford to stay warm in the winter. If your so rich and it doesnt bother you, then come on down and BUY MY GAS!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course not.

The only thing that will change the prices of petrol in America is a change of Presidential administrative leaders (and in turn, alliances and policies)...as well as a grassroots view on how to create fuel.

For example, there are a TON of great ideas out there...but the car companies don't make their new hybrid vehicles affordable to your regular joe 'I earn a grand over the poverty line a year' guy.....and all they can afford is a gas-guzzling Ford.....

That's the rub. The companies make great products BUT, they make them for only the upper-middle class or the wealthy (which make up only about 15% of America.)

How is there supposed to then be a paradigm shift on how things are done when it's only being catered to the few instead of to the many?

First of all the prices are not insane. We was insane were prices that were less than $1.50 gal when Europe was paying $7 gal. The law of supply and demand is kicking in as China enters the world industrial market. You helped contribute to that the last time you bought something from WalMart made in China so you could save a few bucks. We should have put high taxes on gas 10 - 20 years ago so the impact would be less now with the world market demand. I assume you are doing your part by taking the bus and living close to work and walking to the store for groceries like much of the world does. Wake up America: the world is running out of oil!

Who are "anyone"?

Who are "they"?

What would you have them "do"? Nationalize the oil companies (i.e., have a government agency run the oil companies)? Have the federal government set gas prices regardless of the market price of oil and gasoline?

Please note that these "solutions" have in the past been tried here and elsewhere and the side effects were not very pretty.

The best way to get the price of a commodity like gasoline to go down noticeably is to use less of it - a lot less. Then, while you and I are using less of it and the oil companies, in response the the high prices, are finding lots more oil, the supply-demand balance will swing back in our favor and we'll have the lower prices we so dearly crave.

Gasoline is the product of an increasingly scarce commodity. But gasoline would be much, much cheaper if several things happened:

(1) If gasoline and diesel were not taxed

(2) If the USA stopped threatening Iran with war

(3) If the USA stopped trying to meddle in the affairs of the Middle East

(4) If the USA allowed more offshore drilling in places known to have abundant oil (i.e., the Gulf of Mexico)

(5) If the regulatory red tape required to build new refineries were streamlined

(6) If the US govt did a better job of protecting the value of its currency instead of "legally" counterfeiting it by printing more money absent a gold standard

It is probably only going to get worse. In Europe they are paying more than double the US and Canada. China and India are both advancing economically and need oil as well. The Middle East is a hot-bed of violence right now and there is not as much oil as there once was. Hopefully soon there will be a solution such as wind-power or an electric car to help alleviate this situation.

If you want cheap gas, move to Venezuela. They will greet you warmly, with open arms. My salary/wages have gone up faster than gasoline prices. I would safely bet that yours have too. Everyone has always complained about the "high" price of gasoline.

Don't be so naive! Are you aware of how much oil China is now purchasing in the world market? Why don't you STUDY a little economics before you ask such a question?

Everywhere I go there is still congested traffic, nobody takes the bus, so oil companies can continue to charge out the a$$ because no matter how much it is people will pay it just to have their car.

It's called the market. Quit looking for help elsewhere. Invest in a moped. Do you think the gov't is supposed to clean you?

do you understand supply and demand? What are you doing personally to reduce your usage? We are also not the only kids on the block. China's demands are growing faster than ours. We have competition out there.
