I agree with most of the people who have already answered your question. Creating a image of your hard drive and copying it to your new external hard drive is the easiest and most efficient way to backup your files. Norton Ghost is a good choice but you might want to take a look at Acronis True Image and Iolo's Search and Recover 4. Why? Because they are both excellent alternatives to Norton Ghost and they have free trial periods. Why spend money on a software program that you will probably only use once.
1. Acronis True Imagine (15 day trial) http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/
2. Iolo's Search and Recover 4 (30 day trial) http://www.iolo.com/sr/4/download.aspx

Well there is only ONE option for ur case :
Download/Install first a backup software like Norton Ghost for ex .
Then open the program and chose partition/s u wanna backup .......then chose like destination ur external (USB i presume) drive . You can use any backup software but with only one condition .......that software must recognise/work ur external drive (usually is a usb one).
P.S. :Norton Ghost allow INCREMENTAL backup too wich is a cool option for me.

Windows has its own backup software, Its called back-up under system tools, I was a little worried about trying it, but it turns out it worked very well.
