just trying to connect a new motherboard to an old hdd..

No they are not all the same size, but most desktops use the standard ATX size motherboards, which are the same size. The only problem is making sure all of your old components are compatible with the new motherboard, i.e. CPU, memory, HDD etc.

No, in fact, they are all different.

In fact, a different motherboard will take a different CPU and different RAM. So just replacing the motherboard is the beginning of your worst nightmare.

No, ALL motherboard are diffren even on pc's the same size the psp has a motherboard and it smaller then crap :P
And there is the madc mini and stuff like that
REPLACING A MOTHERBOARD SUCKS
