when a mosquito bites you they inject a substance that keeps your blood from coagulating (clotting). This way they get a steady stream of fresh blood. Because it is a foreign substance histamines are released to deal with it. The histamines are what causes the body to itch. Depending upon your bodies sensitivity to the substance the itch can last for hours to several days.
