2000 Professional to be installed to the same directory? What will happen if you install Windows XP Professional in a Windows 98 default directory?

You will overwrite the existing data with the new installation. I suggest that if you're planning on installing Windows on your system that you either do an upgrade installation or a new installation.

I found that an upgrade installation of from Windows 98 to Windows XP was very messy. A lot of programs didn't work right after the upgrade. I would suggest that you boot to the Windows XP CD, delete any existing partitions, reformat the drive and start from scratch.

It will be fine, since you will be upgrading the system Windows XP will automatically override anything 98 tries to do. Go ahead and upgrade in the same directory, but obviously a fresh installation is preferred.

Hope this helps!
