I don't mow the garden, I mow the lawn.
But if one were to mow a garden, I'd think using a mower would be the way to go.

Mow? You mow the lawn not the garden and others, my friend...!
There are techniques.
First, you mowe in one direction and then the other direction on your first try.
Second, vary this after 3 or 4 times of cutting by changing the directions of the strips you cut earlier.
Third, do a bias cut once every other week. What is a bias cut? Diagonal cut.
Fourth, to give it a neat finish look, you should trim the edges of the lawn. This is the major trick that most people miss. The finish will make it all worthwhile.
Get yourself a good mower. Keep the blades sharp. Dull blades rips the grass but not "cut". You can tell whether the grass is ripped or cut, by inspecting the top of the grass. If it is sheared and looks brown then your lawn mower needs a sharp blade.
Enjoy. Grass cutting is an enjoyable exercise. I love the smell of the fresh cut lawn and the neat look is such a reward.
In my opinion, contractors do not do a good job - at least not the way I like. I am too fussy. My entire neighborhood gets them done. I am the only owner in my area working on my grass by myself.
