It's a regional issue. In the Southeast, where I grew up it was called soda. Now I live in the Northwest and it's called pop. In the SE it's glovebox and pocketbook. In the NW it's jockeybox and purse. Those are just a few examples of regional differences.

I've always said "pop" or "soda pop", but a friend of mine says "soda". It's nothing more than a regional variation.

Well the Central USA says Pop, and the east and some of the west coast says soda, it just means you grew up with central or west coast influences either your parents are from there or who ever you lived with had lived in central or west.

They are the same! In fact I have heard people say, "soda pop." It's like bag or sack. It depends upon your geographic region or ethnic culture.
