As the song says, "Love is a many splendored thing." Consider the many loves: I love peanutbutter, I love my cats, I love a good book, and I love my wife. One word, many meanings. The Greeks had at least four words which we translate as love. One of these, agape, is commonly used in the New Testament to represent, giving, self-sacrificing love.

Have you done any research on this? You might be interested in what they say on Wikipedia. Here's my point of view...

Love needs no other words if it's being used in the correct manner. I believe Love is an adjective (opposed to a noun or verb) because it's used to describe a feeling.

What are feelings? Feelings are forces of energy. The term "love" describes the force of attraction between two masses of energy. This could be another person, an object, a sound, anything because all matter is some form of energy.

I think the reason we need to couple the word love with other words is because we think of this word as being too simple to describe such a huge feeling so we overcompensate by adding other descriptive words.

Love is sometimes unexplainable. Love does hurt. But sacrifice and devotion come together with love because sometimes when we love someone, we have to make sacrifices. For example, I loved a man once, and I had to sacrifice that love by letting him go, in order for him to make his dreams come true. Devotion because even though a lot of years have passed I still love him. So you see that love comes with many words, but the important thing is to feel the love, it doesnt matter if it is for a little while.

ARrgghhh the English language has universalized the word love to mean extreme like, favor for, adoration, care, romance, etc.

I love the use in Spanish of words like amor or encantar. There's a clear cut line between the meanings of the words.

Any definition is made up of other close words.

That's what a definition is.

It is because in English we only have one word for love. Other languages have different words for the diferent aspects of love: love of country, love for a parent, sexual love etc.
