Source #2 states it will not cause brith defects or miscarriages. The risks are largely emotional, due to irregular cycle, and the higher likelihood of a multiple pregnancy.

"You are more likely to conceive multiples in the first menstrual cycle after stopping birth control pills." (1)

"...menstrual cycles can be irregular for a few months after discontinuing hormonal contraceptives. Your due date will be calculated more accurately if you wait until your cycles have gotten regular before you get pregnant." (2)

The doctor probably recommends a year because in some cases it can take that long to get pregnant. I think maybe he's just telling you that it could take that long, not that you should wait that long. If you have questions, ask your doctor to be more specific on what he means.

So that your body can get back to normal - in some cases it takes up to a year to get ovulation back. Pill will not cause you to have a miscarriage, because that is not how they work, so, technically, you can start trying right away, but you will most likely not be successful for a while.

i think it's just to get all the hormones out of your system for best odds at conceiving and has little to no effect over the actual pregnancy. but it's just an educated guess.

Birth control pills are hormones. They want your body to be back to normal so that your uterus can successfully carry your baby.
I have heard that three month was the waiting period, but I would listen to your doctor. His/her instruction was based upon your prescription.

I have never heard of being off of it for a year, but I have heard of being off for at least 3 months so that the period can become regular enough to determine ovulation and then conception.

when you are on birth control it changes you hormones . they say it takes a long time for everything to flush out of your system and your hormones to return to normal . i am surprised though i did not think it took that long . you are less likely to miscarry after one year
