You definitely are giving this guy way more power over your life than he deserves.
This is a case where he is able to get away with it, because his supervisor allows it. If the company can afford to pay him for less work, it's time you asked for a raise. And don't hesitate to emphasize your production, performance and on-going contribution. Maybe you getting a raise will drive the guy away!
Don't be the "town crier", stay out of office politics and get away from negativity. Do your job well and formally ask for a raise...

Keep doing your job, don't be like him and do nothing. This is a great opportunity for you to shine. I wouldn't really pick up his slack, but I would do my job well. Your employer will see that you do what you are paid to do, and your reward will come in the fact that you will keep your job. Don't make a big deal out of Bozo not doing his job, just keep plugging away at yours. Saying less will keep you from being labeled a whiner too.

I hate that. I know your problem.

Shoot him.

Okay, okay, maybe not. Just keep up your end, and talk to the coworker about it in a non-confrontational a way as you can. If he doesn't, then pray that he does leave the job and fantasize about all the things you'd really like to say to him. It's theraputic, even if it doesn't solve the problem.

be the better person and try to focus on your work instead of his. when he is away from his desk, steal all of his pens, paper, staples, etc. Also, switch the letters around on his keyboard. While it won't make him work harder, it will be fun to watch him find his stuff.
