SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It is a tiny chip used in the back of some cell phones (usually GSM ones like Cingular and T-Mobile or the carriers in Europe) to store information such as the account number and phone number of a cell phone user. The advantage to the consumer is I could remove my SIM card from my phone, and put it into another phone and that phone instantly becomes mine, with my telephone number and account. You can switch phone models among family members for instance. The SIM card can also be used to to store your contacts info so when you get a new cell phone, all you do is put your sim card into the new phone and you don't have to reprogram all of your friends numbers in it.

T-mobile (and maybe other carriers) uses sim cards. this little card is the "brain" of your phone. so if you want a new phone all you do is take this chip out of the phone and put it in the new one and everything is transferred over.
