To thoroughly and rigorously defend the client to the best of his/her abilities; unfortunately, if you happen to get a lawyer from the "lawyer pool" of the court district you're in (depending where, of course), you might be getting a "newbie" with little experience; If it were me as the defendant, I would personally research and provide documentation to assist in my own defense (especially if I wasn't guilty!); You, as a citizen, have a right to do that!

To defend his client to the best of his ability. He also, however, has an obligation to the Court which must be observed. If a defense attorney is told by his client that the client is guilty he cannot disclose that because of lawyer/client privilege but he cannot, in any way, represent to the court that his client is innocent. The most that he can do is to try to undermine the prosecutions evidence. Where the defense is compromised in this way it is usual for the lawyer to be replaced. Some lawyers, including very high profile lawyers, are prepared to ignore these requirements preferring to win at any cost, something which is a blot on the legal profession and only brings the law into disrepute.

the obligation for any defence attorney in the world is to get there client off the hook or at least minimise their sentence or fine,, if this means lying then so be it,, even in the most gross cases like child abuse these poor b astards have to defend their client even when they no he is guilty, if they dont do there job properly they can be disbarred and not allowed to work in the legal proffesion again,,
it must be so hard sometimes,, but hey they get paid serious money so they cant have it both ways,,
