It's possible to be a Ph.D., doctor, lawyer, businessman, journalist, or an accountant, just to name a few examples, and at the same time be an uneducated person. The difference between true education and vocational training has been cleverly blurred in our time so that we have people successfully practicing their vocations while at the same time being totally ignorant of the larger issues of the world in which they live.
The most obvious symptom is their absence of original thought. Ask them a question and they will end up reciting what someone else thinks or thought the answer was. What do they think, Well, they never thought about it. Their education consisted of learning how to use the library and cite sources.
Another technique is to keep them entertained. Roman emperors did not stage circuses and gladiator contests because they didn't have television. We have television because we don't have circuses and gladiator events.

The World is more complex. There has to be specialization, but I think that your generalizations are not necessarily true. Many areas have been fully researched and there are accepted ideas which command respect. Citing these authorities doesn't mean that the person who uses them is either brainwashed nor has an absence of original thought. To be argumentative merely for the sake of it helps no one. It is also true that any progress proceeds from what has gone before so rejecting the foundations of any discipline is not helpful.
I think it very unlikely that a person would be in any of the professions or have the qualifications you cite and be an 'uneducated person'. Nor do I think that a liberal education is 'true education'. Education is the acquisition of skills and knowledge. Learning about the Ancient Greeks or about History is not going to help you preform an appendectomy.

I think that there is a certain level of control to everything we do. it is only the people who are able to think 'outside the box' who can see this. However, we do have a choice as to whether we accept this control.
If people are happy, they would not need entertaining. So, with the many millions of pounds/dollars being poured into the entertainment industry, we must be a very unhappy people.
As to the question of education, I am afraid that the likes of Einstein and Newton's leaps of understanding are not valued any more. Science and education is becoming increasingly a numbers game, and with all of the great thinkers that have gone before, there's very little new to be said at the moment.
Sad but true.
Nice question.

so totallllly agreee!!!
some people yeah they have a mind of their own their own opnion thoughts etc etc.
However some of the so-called educated only know how to cite what theyv learned never qning what they have learnt or the world in general..
Sad if you think that some of these people have the power to change society and are so influencial in their roles just bcz they have a piece of paper..
Hence that is why i like the english educational university system although it is still not THAT great (dont even get me started!!!) bcz it is much more critical bcz it not only teaches things but gets individuals to have opnions about what they have learned. As far as i know the american educational system is not the same and facts are learned on rota much more...
So in conclusion i agree with you people should be much more critical, open minded and see things from many different angles and learn...
true critical and intellectual people are rare unfortunately... hmmm

We are not being controlled if that was your question. The problem is not world wide. I am aware that many "educated" people are very ignorant, but that is not their fault. This is what the majority of the population of the developed world is taught since childhood. All a person is supposed to do in the developing world is eat, drink, sleep and do what they are taught the best they can.
The art of socializing is dying out, but I'm glad that there are countries and cultures out there that resist this way of life and still there are people with reason and common sense.

So what you are saying is ALL PH.D , lawyers, businessmen etc.. have no original thought? Have you thought that these people are all indiviuals and each have diffrent thoughts and experiences? Your comment is completely arrogant. It sounds like you are insecure about your education and have to tear theirs down to make you feel better. School makes you a better thinker._ By the way, I would not want to go to a doctor who hasn't gone through formal training.

I think you are right!
I have letters before my name! When I was at college training I remember after a lecture, we all sat in the halls of residence discussing what had been taught. I argued one side of an argument. Everyone said, "Hmmm! What you say sounds good!"
At that point I changed to the other side of the argument. Within minutes, everyone was saying, "Ah! What you say is good!"
Most people, even if educated, can only quote what they have read. Original thought is in the possesion of few people.
Good question! :-)

This is an extremely astute question, and I have no good answer for you. But thank you for asking it.
The quick answer to you is that humanity today is in a state of information overload, and while the speed of thought increases, its originality or even rationality declines. Thus thought becomes not thinking but reacting. I don't know if this is a good response, though, and will have to think more.

You are absolutely right when you say some professional people have no original thoughts of their own. All they are doing is quoting things from textbooks, or things they they have been taught by rote repetition. These guys are nothing more than parrots. A well rounded educated person is one who takes what he has learned and use that knowledge to dwell on it ,and expand on it, to improve it.

I agree with you there. But keep in mind- we are only human. We can't expect to learn and know everything. I know plenty of good doctors that carry around small compact computers for references. (for the "just in case" bases) No one is perfect- or we'll be God itself right?.
