I'm not a professional psychologist, so I'm going to crib from someone who's done much better research.
Kirtland C. Peterson wrote a book called "Mind of the Ninja", which describes three basic levels of skill (which might also apply to behavior traits).
The first level is unconscious and un-integrated, which refers to someone who has a knack for some activity or behavior but can't really explain the how or why of it.
The second level is conscious and un-integrated, which describes a situation where someone is getting training and practice but still has to think about performing the activity or behavior. Most folk who are trying to learn a skill for the first time as adults start here; consider some folk learning to use a computer, or any young person learning to play a musical instrument.
The third level is subconscious but integrated, in that the person can not only perform the behavior without thinking about it but actually can explain the why and the how; it has become a genuine part of him or her, rather than 'a gift from the gods'.

Frankly, quite a lot of the 'wonderful' people may well be in the first stage of demonstrating a 'wonderful' behavior trait, simply because they happened to stumble upon the trait when very young and kept at it.

If, on the other hand, you know a 'wonderful' person who made a deliberate and conscious choice to strive for that particular behavior pattern, then you may consider yourself quite fortunate: this person has the potential to teach you how to be wonderful in that way.

What a cliché question? I guess people just do not want to see that they are wonderful because everything is just overshadowed by the sufferings they receive. What they forget is that the sufferings are things that make us more wonderful. Isn't life wonderful. This is getting a bit childish...and gay...oh well

"Because we all have a backstage view of ourselves," Garrison Keillor.

Meaning we are fully aware of our limitations, our humanity. I think that humility is crucial to being great, when we start to think of ourselves as greater than others, then we know for sure we are not.

The most profound beauty in mankind, is beauty unawares.

Good question.
I think it's because a lot of people have a tendency to be overly critical of themselves. Either that or they are too modest and this make them unaware of how otheres see them

Because if they are truly wonderful, I am sure they must be equally humble. People with humility do not go around assuming they are truly wonderful.

It is often because of porr self-esteem and unrealistic standards of beauty and wonderful-ness conveyed by the media and popular culture.

I think it is a question of distorted perceptions.

You know, like anorexic persons who perceive themselves as "too fat" whereas they are seriously skinny. Distorted perceptions...

I think things would be different if those underestimating persons weren't told they were worth nothing in their childhood.

I think I still suffer of this syndrome.

I know what you mean.

I know people who are so wonderful but they have no idea of their wonderfulness. I tell them how wonderful they are but they just deny it.

Maybe that's bcuz of their humbleness or maybe they feel uncomfortable of their own light that they shine on others.

It's hard to say.

good question. :))

Guilt, mostly.

Many wonderful people feel guilt for past offences very strongly. They need to be treated gently, so as to learn to leave their guilt and shame behind.
