At the moment I think we have some great British bands like The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, The Feeling, Razorlight and Arctic Monkeys to name but a few. Do you think that the "Boy & Girl Band" days are over?

I love it. I'm getting a bit fed up of razorlight, kooks, arctic monkeys being everywhere but they are good bands and I've been listening to them all for a while before they made it, which would be why. I love loads of the bands coming out just now though, eg mystery jets, long blondes, forward russia and the research. There's a great scene in Scotland too with bands like sons and daughters and aberfeldy. Lets hope we never see Westlife again.

i don't think its so good at the moment. All these new bands are carbon copies of eachother, taking all their influences from the same bands, from the likes of the libertines, the strokes, the clash and from eachother. This isn't a good way to create new music. There's no individuality or originality anymore.

I'd say that about 5 years ago, the music scene here was amazing, because everything was new and fresh. Now its getting tedious, and the sculptors of this neo-Britpop movement have departed. Every decade or so, some new movement breaks the monotomy, and we are in dire need of one right now. Nonetheless, i suppose the Artic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand are still great.

But definitely, boybands and girlbands seem to be a thing of the past. The nearest thing we have is McFly.

If the british music scene is behind the US scene (as "Martin" above seems to say) that is a relatively new phenomenon - don't you think? I mean Classic Rock started in the UK (with the Beatles and Stones), Punk and New Wave started in the UK, Alternative started in the UK.

I am no longer familiar with current British music, but I can say that now that the 70's fashions are wrapping up (and they must be now that gauchos have arrived on the fashion scene) that we are heading toward a replay of the 80s (you can just start to see it in the tops you see in the stores) and with the 80s style could come a resurgence of the Boy & Girl Bands that you mention. I wonder if that will usher in a music renaissance (like punk in the 1980s), or if we must wait until we are through this next "rerun" before something truly new and interesting happens (and I wonder if I will be too old to really care!).

Peace!

There's some good groups coming through but I don't think that the boy and girl band days are over yet by long shot. There's still a lot of money to be made out of it. At least some of the X factors seem to be disappearing after their 15 minutes of fame.

Love Franz Ferdinand. Love The Arctic Monkeys. My favorite band is not English though. It's Greenday.

I'm British but I can't say there's anything on the British scene which especially excites me just now. Supergrass are always good, but apart from them my preferred artists or bands of the moment are North American:
The Shins
Wilco
Ryan Adams
Gillian Welch
Hayden
Rufus & Martha Wainwright
Jim O'Rourke, etc, etc, etc

All the bands u entioned are nothing but boy bands who can play an instrument, so they nothing more than the new wave of boy and girl bands. The uk music scene has been inficted with do it DIY pop wannabes. The days of true musiens are well and truly gone and along with it a good Uk music scene. Its liek we had our day and gave up. The bands that you have mentioned need to step it up a gear and use thier talents for good and not evil and stop pissing about with other peoples already tierd riffs and bring their music and the uk music scene back to forfront of good music.

Absolute pants ! My kids wonder how I know all the songs... Because they are all backing tracks or even full songs from the 80's .. And any new stuff is just wailing !! And the USA is lost in space where music is concerned.. its all Rap with a capital C

Dunno,..last good band was Alice in Chains, and they are from the US. I liked a lot of the British stuff back in the day though.
