first in the olden times it was because they were uncomfortable or the felt a kick and it was said if you make motions on your midsection the baby will feel it and calm the kicking.
now days.. it may be the same.. but i see some do it to get attention like being pregnant is 'the in thing to do' or something.
i have a neighbor who's doing it every time someone is near and watching then she gets the attention she's wanting.

Woman rub there bellies to have a better bond with their child. It is especially important for fathers to rub the belly as well. When a baby is born it knows right away who it's parents are, by touch and voice. The baby could of been moving frantically in the belly and the mom and dad were trying to calm it down. It's natural. When you become pregnant you'll understand.

Obviously you have never been pregnant. It's not all comfortable. I know that when I rub my belly, it's to get the baby's foot out of my rib cage, or to try and move her off of my bladder. The baby can sense you rubbing your belly, maybe it comforts them. They can also tell the difference between their mothers touch, and a strangers touch. It's just showing affection.

I rubbed my belly alot because it got my daughter moving sometimes. Plus...it's just there. Sticking way out. It's just a natural thing to do I guess. I never really thought about it. I think a lot of people are in awe because they have a human life growing inside of them.

Maybe they could feel the baby moving and she wanted to share it with him. Maybe she is just excited about the baby and wants to give it lots of cuddles! It is a great feeling when you know you have a little one inside of you and they can actually feel you when you rub your belly. I never cared what other people thought of me when I was pregnant. You aren't thinking about other people, just your baby!!

Because the baby was kicking hard and rubbing your belly gets it to settle down.
I guess you have never been pregnant....
Right now I am holding my belly because I can't breathe... I swear this baby is crushing my lungs.

Because it's a way of connecting with the baby. You can't see it or really touch it. Plus some women might do it when the baby moves or kicks.

mine itched so i rubbed it to help the itch. I also talked to my belly as if to comfort my baby. If you have never been pregnant then you have no idea what it is like.
