springfield is a very common name in the states, the reason why the state is never revealed is because homer is an average american joe from an average american town with an average sounding name. and if the town was springfield illinois or mass how would the locals feel being refered to as where the simpsons are from.

That is one of the show's many secrets! The creators had a field day about this especially during the writing of the episode 'Mr Lisa Goes to Washington' in which Lisa writes an essay on the merits of the USA then gets selected for a Readers Digest-style finale in Washington.
A montage is shown of the different states but the state in which the Simpsons reside is neutrally represented by a three eyed fish (some say it's North Tacoma, but I won't comment!).
You really need to see the episode for yourself and judge.

They deliberately don't say. In all the years it has been on they have avoided saying which state Springfield is in. There are (apparently) multiple towns in America called Springfield which makes it just as difficult.
There was one episode where Apu(the Kwikimart clerk) is taking his citizenship test and Just as Homerpoints to the state Springfield is in Bart is place in front of the camera to obscure our view of the map.
This example shows that only one person knows Springfield's location, Matt Groening.

That's the wonderful thing. Springfield is found in CO, MA, MO, IL, AR, OH, NJ, GA, KY, WI. The Simpsons picked a good city name to be from.
I've been to Springfield, MA. The NUKE plant is about 30 miles north. So that is a pretty good candidate. It has factories, schools, colleges, rich people, poor people. If you drive up and down the streets from 3:30 pm to 6pm, you just might catch a glimpse of HOMER, comin' home from work.

They always fudge on that one. They sometimes even DELIGHT in being vague and obfuscate like crazy so that you never ever really know. They put characters in front of maps, point at dozens of different states and so on to hide the truth - the real truth.
Springfield is in Korea!

Is it not supposed to be a joke that it could be anywhere as there's a Springfield everywhere you go? There's even one near Glasgow I'm sure but I suppose you could answer that it's in an awfy state, Ha!

The Simpsons are not held in ANY state. At various times, they refered to different things that would point to different states but finally a few years back, they said that they were in the 51st state. It has no name.

There are at least eight large towns called Springfield in the US. Perhaps that's why they chose the name - it's so generic and can be anywhere near you (if you are an American, of course).

Though the question is purposely avoided on the show, in one episode, where they do a "Behind the Music" spoof of the show from the point of view of the cartoon characters, the state is revealed as Kentucky. Though it could be a mistake on the narrator's part :)

I think Lisa pointed it out once, but the area of the US map she pointed to was not visible to the viewer...
A Joke name: everywhere/nowhere in US, cos Springfield is such a common name... (Like Elm Street, every town has one)
