Depends what the starts are originally from, and what kind of material your couch is made of. If the stains are from *ahem* human elements, then using a pet-stain remover usually does the trick. The remover has special chemicals that break down the enzymes to remove pet stains, and it works for people stains too. If you have a leather couch, use Nivea hand lotion (works on leather/lambskin jackets too).

Without knowing what fabric your couch is made with, there is no way to give a useful answer. There are many furniture cleaners sold, that you may like to read up on at the store. If the cloth has a lot of color, anything too strong may take the color out completely, and something too strong could eat the fabric as well.
I generally have the furniture cleaned along with the carpet, as those people understand fabric needs and do a good job for a fair cost.
The way the couch is with two white stains, I suppose you could try anything and if it fails, toss the couch and get a new one. You really can't keep it with those hideous stains anyway...... can you?
