It stretches the skin beneath the eyes so you don't get the mascara everywhere.

Not all do, I don't.
Some find it helps though. It stretches the bottom and top of their eyes farther apart, making the applicator have better access to the lashes. Try opening your mouth wide and see how far a part your upper and lower lashes get from eachother.

When you open your mouth it elongates your face and subsequently will smooth out the skin around your eyes, causing the lashes to protrude, which then makes it easier to apply mascara to the eyelashes.

Because opening the mouth tends to be able to pull the face down. Not everybody can have a one type of tasks of not using their hands, just using to apply make up

I don't open my mouth when I put mascara on, but I do close it. And if you don't open and close your mouth, what else are you suppose to do?

LOL.... that is what I have always wondered. I guess it is just a natural thing... because everybody does it when they don't think about it. If I try really hard, I can put it on without opening my mouth. So It CAN be done! =)

It is really silly...but we do this in order to stretch the skin on our faces and open our eyes wider. Somehow this ritual helps our eyes open wide in order for the mascara to be placed on most efficiently without getting any on our faces.

It stretches and tightens the facial skin around the eyes. Gives them a 'cleaner canvas' to work on, so to speak.
Same reason guys often open their mouths while shaving.

try to do it now: try to widen your eyes, as big as possible, your mouth will open naturally.
when you put on mascara, you need to widen your eyes to prevent smudging. i think it's natural reaction.
