do you think these groups that sing and dance together can be called a "band" considering they usually don't play an instrument, write their own music or other things that a genuine band does?

Absolutely NOT! Just drives me crazy when I hear the term "boy bands"...when there's not one instrument in their hands when they're performing (well, depending on what their doing at the time).
There are 2 definitions in the dictionary referring to music for the word "band".
1. instrumentalists not including string players (that one can be argued, since violins are used by some)
2. a group of "musicians" PLAYING popular music for dancing (this one pretty much makes my point for me).
There's not one group I can think of, from the 60's to the 80's, where they performed without instruments (examples are, pretty much all the Motown groups, Dion & The Belmonts, the 4 Seasons, and others) and were ever referred to as a band. Even the Bee Gees were never really known as a band, even though they did perform with instruments later in their career.
Nope, as has been stated in an earlier answer...they're groups or performers, NOT bands. IMHO

No they are not a band they are a product, conceived by some producer somewhere for the sole purpose of making money hand over fist, usually at someone's expense.

Not all "real bands" write their own music, either. Rock/pop/whatever is the only place in today's musical world where people routinely write their own music.

I was initially going to say a big NO to this question, but one of the greatest bands of all time came under this catagory, at least initially - The Monkeys. So no, except for them!

nope, part of being a band is making music, which includes writing and playing it. not just dancing and singing around to someone else's meaningless lyrics.
