There is no flicking spring in the swiss army knife.

You have to pull each blade out, breaking a nail on each occasion.

All materials are elastic, including metals.

Just look at a bulldog clip or leaf spring. Springs do not have to be helical.

In a Swiss Army knife the long backing strip acts as a spring.

When a blade is opened the hinged part of the blade is shaped into a cam which forces the backing strip out and then it recovers and locks the blade in position, either open or closed,

Take a steel knitting needle and bend it slightly and then release it. It acts like a spring! Have fun/

Mine does not have a spring. Could you be referring to the corkscrew? It works very nicely as do all the other features. My personal favorite is the tweezer.

'nuff said?
