see the same thing happened to me.. i live in india and i was talking to this american friend of mine.. nd den suddenly in the convo when i used the word s***... i did not no that it is considered a rude word in the us.. or that is what i think .. is it? but anyways he was like u shudnt use rude words
but the point im trying to make is that most of the people who have a tanned skin try and get fair.. and it's totally the opposite in the west.. am i rite? so these are just differences in culture that we as global citizens should understand
the best thing to do is to explain it to the person as to why u think having a tan is cool in the west
yes, at times it is a language barrier and people tend to misinterpret things said in english and it happens in most non-english speaking countries.

You may be correct that it is a cultural difference ,but most caring people think before they speak and consider how that question or statement can sound to another .I do my best to not make statements that offend in any culture, perhaps you can rephrase your question after listening to it before you say it.Some people are making racist judgmental statements on purpose ,disguised as innocent ones.
Its the old bait and switch form, such as ," I really like Iraqi people, but they sure are fanatical" So listen to your own words and try to put yourself in that other persons culture/shoes.

Cultural differences. Even those who speak the same language but live in different areas of the world have subtle differences in communication. The best thing to do is just to educate oneself about those differences.

Good luck.

Perhaps you are using the wrong phrase. It's not the words, it's how they are put together.
On the flip side, this is how you make friends?
