You need to:
- set both computers to be in the same workgroup;
- create shared folders, and make sure that they have at least read access to them
- make sure that the not broadband modem has a static IP and not dynamic
- set the second PC to use a static IP - most preferable to easen the connection to it, as Windows won't have to resolve IP to connect to it
- the second computer shall need a username and password to be able to connect to that account, so, if you don't want to provide your username and password, I suggest creating a temp account only for this usage
- to connect to the internet through the other PC, you need to set the default gateway for that machine (second PC) as the IP of the first machine

PS:
Make sure that the cable you have is a crossover by looking at the order of the wires in the cable...if the colors are not in the same order, then it's a crossover...

I have three computers and my son, the family computer guru, has all three on my cable service, they are networked, but are not set for file sharing. Two computers have WinXP and my old one has Win98. I've had no problems. We did have to buy a router and linksys.

I don't understand it at all - I simply work within the programs. This may require more knowledge than you have and you may need professional help.

specific you like a router and 2 ethernet cables going to all of the computers. The computers ought to grasp the relationship and commence utilising it the 2nd you plug it in. you need to use a application like Akeni LAN Messenger to pass archives, or you may run an hardship-free information superhighway server and in simple terms place the archives interior the biggest htdocs folder and get admission to it on the different pc (that's how I do it)

Each PC needs a *unique* IP address.

Change the 2nd PC to 192.168.0.2

-----------------------

Check the precise wording of the error.

On each PC, do
Start, Run
then type in
cmd
then type in
ipconfig /all

and give us the info
