Do you do the ironing? Did you switch it on? Did you plug it in? What happened to make you stop ironing? If you came to the end of the pile of ironing, or if your ironing time ran out, the chances are that you switched it off, even though you did it in 'automatic pilot' mode. Things we do by habit, we usually couldn't say for sure whether we have done them or not, but we have. If your ironing was interrupted, you may or may not have remembered to switch it off, it would depend on the nature of the interruption. Most irons have thermostats and keep switching themselves off when they get hot. Usually this means that that the house isn't going to catch fire, but I suppose that depends on whether you leave the iron standing on its heel or with the ironing surface on the ironing board (not good!)
I suppose you are asking this question because you can't simply go and check? Or were you simply hoping to open up a lively debate where people send in their horror stories and/or reassurances?
I hope everything goes well for you and your iron.

Leaving the iron on is ok when ironing but it has no stand-by facility. it should be turned off after use for safety reasons and reducing your energy use. Remember 1 kilo watt used for 1 hour costs at least 10p and the money is only one thing damage to the enviroment is the other more important issue. If you left a 3kw iron on for 24 hours it cost you more than £7.20 and the environment more.

I did that once years ago and I can tell you that IT WAS ON. It bunned right through the padding on the ironing board and the bedroom smelled like ronchey musty smoke for months, luckey the house dident burn down so ever since then Im very careful not to do it again so you better go check because you never know.

if you did i hope you at least removed your shirt from under the iron...that way, even though your entire house burnt down, you'd still have a shirt for your back
