you appear to conform by saying ''why does every1 feel'' when you and I both know this is not the case. we must be careful not to use the language of conformity, we might need to prove to our neighbours that we can keep up with them and possibly afraid they won't talk to us if we appear different, some people have great difficulty relating to others who are different and refuse to conform. allowing the tv to tell us what we must have is for some a lot easier than having to decide for themselves

Everyone likes to feel that they are part of a community. For some people the only way to fit in is to look and act exactly like other people. When you find an accepting community..then your individuality can really come out.

But...in reality the more you look at humans in general, we're pretty much alike..we want the same things..someone from another planet would probably see us as alike as we see other kinds of animals...don' t you think?

We live in a place and time where we are taught that non-conformists are just wierd. We watch TV and see that everyone there is wearing a certain style, certain haircut, certain shoes, and instinctivly, our we tell ourselves that we have to look that way too. We have gotten caught up in the suburban style of life (for lack of a better description). Everything has to look exactly the same. Anyone who steps out of line is just out.

To a certain extent, people follow trends as these are what are advertised, glamourised and made to look appealing to the masses - which is obviously going to have an effect on what people find attractive.....however we are also confined by what we can afford - thus leading to a high percentage of people being forced to buy from cheaper outlets (Ikea springs to mind) I always find that it is the little things that allow us to express our individuality....flowers, cusions, photos, artwork, lighting etc...

its to do with being accepted as part of a group or culture. it gives people a sense of belonging and having a connection to others. but at the same time we all like to think we are different and unique.

I agree!

I know people who go to the trouble and expense of hiring decorators and instead of expressing their own style and taste will give the decorator carte blanche or worse yet duplicate someone else's room down to the last throw pillow!

some people think that if they have certain items in their house or a certain style, it means that they have money or power and it symbolizes something that they want or think they have
I know what you mean and i hate it, in california it is pretty much most people have the same house because all the new houses are cookie cutter houses ugh

To go along with the flow; so as not to be called lame; to assure others you're as normal as them; you're up on the trend... etc... etc... It's not sad. It's fine and I care less.
