Yes. I will give you two examples of two excellent actors that broke the mold many yrs ago.

Paul Robeson was a fine actor and also highly educated.
Juano Hernandez was also a fine actor. His characters were not stereotypical.
Both actors broke the mold that many African American actors were subjected many yrs ago.
So if they could, I am sure others have and others will.

Hollywood is very much about stereotype roles. But being well trained is never a bad thing. Turn down the roles that you don't believe in, but just remember That means they will cast someone else, and they will get paid for it - it will not stop the message from being put out infront of an audience.

You seem to be working on the assumption that Hollywood success is somehow tied to being a trained actor. News to me. If that's true, it's a relatively recent development.

Good luck!

Eventually. There will be dues to pay, regardless of talent and training, and those roles may be what pays the bills and gets you noticed for a while. Try to be patient and it can eventually come together.

James Erel Jones did just that. He has played many rolls which would not have been concidered "black", and his sone Jr. is doing the same, while is making a killing playing the sterotype roll in Spelling Bee here in Chicago.

Maybe, it's really hard to say. Things are a bit different today, but Hollywood doesn't change easily.
